TUESDAY

Boys Basketball – host Duluth Denfeld, 7 p.m. Game Notes: A possible preview of a Section 7AAA playoff game, in the first game of a home-and-home Lake Superior Conference regular season series. The Hawks (0-2) are led by 6-foot-4 senior power forward Abe Soumis, a HowieHanson.com 2023-24 Preseason First Team selection and arguably the second-best player in northeastern Minnesota next to Cherry point guard Isaac Asuma, a Gophers recruit. Hermantown also features point guard Nathan Hill, another HowieHanson.com First Team pick. The Hunters are led by junior point guard Marnaries Ferguson. Both Hermantown and Duluth Denfeld participated in the Tip-Off Tournament in Hermantown over the weekend. The Hawks lost to Big Lake 84-74 on Friday night and to Kasson-Mantorville 71-65 Saturday afternoon. Soumis had 55 points in the two games. The Hunters, meanwhile, defeated Kasson-Mantorville 75-62 and fell to Big Lake 72-65.

THURSDAY

Girls Hockey – host Grand Rapids-Greenway, 7 p.m. Hermantown Hockey Arena. Game Notes: Proctor-Hermantown edged defending Class AA state champion Gentry Academy 4-3 Saturday in Vadnais Heights. Jane Eckstrom had two goals and Neelah McLeod stopped 20 of 23 shots for the Mirage (3-3-1). The Thunderhawks are 5-2 overall and had won four straight heading into Tuesday night's home game against Rock Ridge (4-5-1).

Girls Basketball – at Proctor, 7:15 p.m. Game Notes: The Hawks (1-2) defeated host Irondale 46-41 on Saturday, as Bailey Zagelmeyer scored a team-high 14 points and teammate Olivia Johnson added 13. Hermantown led by two points at the half. The Rails are 0-2 following losses to Crosby-Ironton, 75-61, and Mountain Iron-Buhl, 80-72.

Boys Basketball – host Cloquet, 7:15 p.m. Game Notes: The Lumberjacks are led by junior guard Jack Battaglia, a HowieHanson.com Second Team shooting guard.

Boys Hockey – host Centennial, 3 p.m. Game Notes: The Class 1A/No. 1-rated Hawks are 1-0-1 after defeating Cretin-Derham Hall 2-1 on Friday and skating to a 3-3 overtime tie against Hill-Murray Saturday, both strong, season-opening road tests. Senior goaltender Dane Callaway came up big in the back-to-backs, stopping 68 of 72 shots, and sophomore sensation AJ Francisco didn't disappoint in his first varsity games, scoring a goal and adding three assists.
