  • Softball at Superior, 4:30 p.m. - "Superior went to the state title game last year and return all of their starters except one, but we are ready for the challenge and are excited to finally take the field," said Hawks coach Michelle Sweeney. "It should be a good game." Weather permitting, Hermantown will visit Cloquet on Thursday. "Cloquet is a fun conference game and both teams always look forward to playing each other," said Sweeney. "This is an important game for us because it is both a conference and section game. With temperatures in the mid-30's this week, it may be challenging to get these games in. Regardless, we are ready to go and are excited to get our season going."

Thursday

  • Baseball at Denfeld (2), 4:30 p.m. - The Hawks (1-0) defeated host North Branch 10-6 on Friday, as sophomore River Freeman clubbed a pair of home runs. â€śWe saw lots of good things in the opener, and a lot of things to work on,” said Hermantown coach Billy Tafs. “But we can’t ever be too upset when our defense committed only one error and our pitchers walked only one. Our approach at the plate started out good, but progressively got worse as the game went on. We got a good first outing from Cruz Runyan, who made one mistake against one of the state’s best hitters and he made us pay for it. We bypassed our normal arms, and the inexperienced guys came in and were fantastic. We allowed zero walks from our bullpen with very little combined varsity experience between them. The weather we are receiving today (Sunday) is hard to swallow. Our game against Hibbing on Tuesday has already been cancelled, and I would think based on the forecast the Thursday double header against Denfeld has a chance to follow suit. After that we would play 4A powerhouse Centennial on Saturday (another game we were supposed to host, but got moved to the cities a couple weeks back), so if that’s the case the beginning of the year between North Branch and Centennial has turned into a very difficult way to open the season. But hopefully it will give us an accurate measuring stick on where we are and the areas where we need to improve.” The Hunters split their 2023 openers against Cloquet at Wade Stadium, losing 20-6 and winning 9-4.
